by Culver Legal, Personal Injury Attorneys

The Crash

A devastating vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash occurred on Monday, March 2, at approximately 11:26 a.m. near 440 Maine Avenue in Long Beach, California. A male driver attempting to make a turn allegedly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to strike two victims standing nearby.

One child was killed in the collision. A woman sustained injuries and was transported to a local trauma center. Emergency personnel from both the Long Beach Police Department and Long Beach Fire Department responded to the scene. An officer transported the critically injured child to a hospital in a patrol vehicle in an effort to expedite care.

Investigation Underway

Authorities secured the area while investigators examined the scene, gathered evidence, and interviewed witnesses to establish the exact sequence of events. At the time of publication, no criminal charges had been publicly announced.

Pedal Error Accidents and Civil Liability

Pedal confusion crashes — where a driver mistakenly presses the gas pedal instead of the brake — are a recognized and preventable cause of serious accidents. While these incidents may occur unintentionally, the driver can still be held legally liable for resulting injuries and deaths.

Families who lose a child or loved one in a pedestrian crash involving driver negligence may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Wrongful death damages
  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of companionship and emotional suffering
  • Medical costs incurred prior to death
