by Culver Legal, Personal Injury Attorneys
The Incident
Early Friday morning at approximately 2:46 a.m., a sedan caught fire on the westbound 10 Freeway at the Interstate 215 interchange in Colton, California. Emergency responders arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames on the right shoulder of the freeway.
A man, a woman, and several children were already outside the vehicle when firefighters arrived. All occupants had evacuated safely before emergency crews reached the scene. California Highway Patrol officers, San Bernardino County fire agencies, and the Colton Fire Department responded. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze while officers investigated the circumstances.
Arrest and Charges
The male driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He remained in police custody as the investigation continued. Authorities have not disclosed additional information regarding the identities of those involved or the precise sequence of events that led to the vehicle fire.
DUI With Passengers: Heightened Legal Consequences
When a driver operates a vehicle under the influence with passengers — especially minors — the legal consequences can be significantly more severe. In California, DUI charges involving children in the vehicle can result in enhanced penalties, including additional jail time and charges of child endangerment.
Beyond criminal liability, victims and passengers in DUI-related incidents may pursue civil claims for injuries, property damage, and emotional distress.
